INVISALIGN Q&A
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment. Instead of using rubber bands, wires, and brackets like traditional braces, it uses clear, custom-designed mouthpieces to improve the position and alignment of your teeth.
Invisalign aligners are unique in that they’re removable and discreet. They’re a clear thermoplastic called SmartTrack® that’s free of latex, gluten, BPA, and BPS. This means they’re safe for pregnant women and people with allergies.
What issues can Invisalign clear aligners correct?
Dr. Nourian usually recommends Invisalign to correct mild to moderate orthodontic issues, including:
Crooked teeth
Gaps between teeth
Crossbite
Overbite
Underbite
Open bite
You might also benefit from treatment with Invisalign if you have crowded teeth that rub up against each other.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign treatment begins with an in-office exam. During your appointment, Dr. Nourian reviews your oral health history and asks about your goals for treatment. He also takes oral X-rays to determine the position of your teeth and the alignment of your jaws.
If you have gum disease or cavities, he may recommend treatment prior to moving forward with Invisalign. If your teeth and gums are healthy, Dr. Nourian takes digital impressions and uploads them to a special software program.
The program allows Dr. Nourian to map out a custom-tailored orthodontic treatment plan. It lays out the step-by-step movements of your teeth, ensuring you achieve a symmetrical and healthy smile. After approving your treatment plan, he sends your impressions to a laboratory that makes your clear aligners.
How long does treatment with Invisalign clear aligners take?
Orthodontic treatment with Invisalign typically takes 6-12 months. If you have severe alignment issues, it may take longer, up to 18 months. Be patient and follow the team’s instructions carefully. Wear your clear aligners 20-22 hours each day and only take them out to eat or clean them.
Throughout treatment, you return to Ron Nourian, DDS, every two or three weeks. At each appointment, you receive a new set of custom aligners. The clear aligners place slight pressure on your teeth, slowly but surely moving them into the proper position.
After you finish wearing your aligners, you transition to a retainer. A retainer is a custom mouthpiece that prevents your teeth from moving back to their original position.
